In 1996, when I was 30, I had an epiphany.
I decided that I must - that day, that hour - that very minute!
become an archaeologist.
As it turned out, I very nearly did major in Archaeology, with
24 out of the required 28 units completed. Before that, though,
I had to pass a University entrance course for mature age students.
The only one available immediately was Mathematics.
I learned to love the precision and reliability of Maths, but
even more, the possibility for romance and thrill. Naturally,
I wanted to share this potential with other people too, and thus
my final project - not just mine, actually, but completed in tandem
with the very capable and bright Sharyn Milnes - necessitated
the translation of mathematical history and principles to a supermarket
checkout tabloid format.
This novel approach was thankfully appreciated by our generous
marker, and hence I embarked upon the ship of higher education.
For those of you who don't know much about the history of Chicks
in Maths, this might prove novel reading, and to those of you
looking for a more interesting way to present mathematics than
feint ruled paper and biro, a frisson of inspiration.
